Continuity and Change in Russian Politics

The course “Continuity and Change in Russian Politics” aims to introduce students to contemporary Russian politics. The course starts with a general overview of major political institutions of the Russian state and political practices, which is done in a comparative fashion using the new institutionalism’s approach, which allows to understand both the formal framework and actual performance of actors and institutions in Russia since the early 1990s. The impact of the Russian geography and history (and their complex interconnections) on institutions is to be assessed. Students will also be introduced to the extensive discussions on this issue. The course also provides students with analysis of stages and problems of modernization of Russia. An overview of the “agents of change” (private enterprise, civil society, political culture, collective action, etc.) and “agents of continuity” will be offered. The faculty will generously share their insights into theoretical and empirical puzzles of Russian politics. Out-of-class activities are planned to make study of Russian politics a personal endeavor. Ultimately, students will develop solid skills to interpret and analyze political phenomena.
