    О курсе

Power is one of the key explanatory categories in contemporary human sciences. What is power from the anthropological point of view? How universal are the notions of power and prestige, wealth and poverty? How contemporary societies differ from this point of view? The goal of this course is to use discussions about power to introduce two closely interrelated anthropological fields: economic and political anthropology. Drawing on ethnographic examples from different regions of the world, including case studies of the post-socialist, post-colonial, “traditional,” “developing,” “modern” and “post-modern” contexts, the course charts main approaches and theoretical debates in these two fields. Topics such as the anthropology of markets and gifts, state and statelessness, ethnicity and nationalism, war and conflict, gender and sexuality are examined. The course also addresses how this kind of anthropological knowledge has been used in applied contexts, such as indirect rule in modern empires, Soviet and post-Soviet nationality policies, market research, economic globalization and transnationalism.
