This is a comprehensive course covering the main themes of the global energy order from its early years in the 19th century to the present day with a particular focus on energy policies and the role of energy in international relations. The course will examine past, present and potential future transformations of the global energy landscape. A specific attention will be paid to global energy security and how countries and their alliances view energy risks, challenges and opportunities. An emphasis will be made on how these considerations influence energy strategies and international relations and on how energy security is shaped by geopolitical factors.

Specific subjects of the course will include an assessment of the global institutional energy framework, the geopolitics of the energy transition and climate change, the impact of sanctions on energy relations and Russia’s role in the global energy order.
