Diploma “Teacher of English as a Second Language”
Dear Minor Graduates. First of all, congratulations on successfully completing the minor! You did it! Over the past two years, you have learned a lot about languages, cultures, and teaching, and even taught a bit yourselves.
Now it's time to continue your education to become a professional English teacher.
You have the opportunity to earn a state-recognized professional diploma of "Teacher of English as a Second Language."

What do you need to do?
The entire diploma program "Teacher of English as a Second Language" consists of 6 courses, as well as preparation of a small final project:
1.Language, Culture and Intercultural Communication (5 credits)
2.Didactics and Foreign Language Teaching (5 credits)
3.Effective Foreign Language Learning (5 credits)
4.Language Teaching Methods and Technologies (5 credits)
5. Curriculum Design and Language Assessment (2 credits) + Project (Designing a Learning Unit) (1 credit)
6. Practicum in English Teaching (2 credits)
Total credits: 25
You have already completed the first four courses as part of the minor (free of charge). From September 2024 to January 2025, we will organize two more courses and the project.
NEW!!! Language Proficiency Requirement (lowered to mark 6 for the independent exam):
English level B2 or higher, confirmed by an HSE independent English exam score of 6 or higher. If your score is 5 or lower, or if you have not taken this exam, please contact the Academic Director (vvpavlov@hse.ru) to discuss your case (don’t worry, if you know English, understand lectures and seminars in English, and can teach lessons entirely in English, we will accept you).
Cost: The total fee for this additional diploma program (2 courses + project, 5 credits, 56 classroom hours) is 24,300 rubles, including the student discount for HSE ContEd programs. You will get credit for the 4 Minor courses without any additional fees, so this is the only payment you will need to make to get the diploma.
Payment deadline: 16.09.24
You can pay the whole amount at once, or there is an option to pay in two installments: First payment - 10,000 roubles - by 16.09.24; second payment - 14,300 roubles - by 01.11.24
Payment instructions are here.
Tentative start date: September 20, 2024
Program duration: Approximately 4 months (ending in late January)
NEW!!! Schedule:
-
Lectures on Fridays, initially from 19:40-21:10 (Module 1), with possible 'double' lectures from November (18:10-21:10). Recordings will be made and slides will be provided for those unable to attend Friday lectures.
-
The schedule for seminars and the practicum will be arranged based on your preferences. Complete the seminar availability form (Module 1 only, Sept-Oct) by 11 am (Moscow time) September 14, 2024 - here is the link:
Please indicate ALL the times when you are AVAILABLE (i.e you don't have classes), so that we could create a seminar schedule that works for all of you. The last question of the form asks for your preference: you can write anything there (e.g. prefer seminars on Mondays), and we'll try to accommodate your preferences (but cannot guarantee). Please complete this form only when you know your schedule for Module 1 (but no later than 11am, Saturday, 14.09). Seminar attendance (with some exceptions, of course) and fulfillment of all the practicum requirements are expected.
What will you learn in addition to the minor courses?
Course 1: Curriculum Design and Language Assessment (28 contact hours + project 4 contact hours)
The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge and practice in designing ESL curriculum and teaching materials, and to teach students how to assess learners' proficiency in grammar, vocabulary, and language skills, and make informed educational decisions based on these assessments. Learners will learn how to design effective learning units, consider student needs, and select, adapt, and design materials (including published and online materials, authentic materials, and student-designed materials). At the end of the course, students will prepare a learning unit, which is the final project of the diploma program.
Course 2: Practicum in English Teaching (24 contact hours)
The primary purpose of the practicum is to allow participants to apply the knowledge and skills they have obtained and to gain practical teaching experience. Learners will receive instruction in lesson planning and practice teaching under the supervision of an experienced EFL professional, who will provide feedback on their teaching. They will also provide feedback to their peers and learn from each other.

FAQs:
What courses and grades will be listed in the "Teacher of English" diploma? How many hours and credits will be indicated?
-
All 4 minor courses with grades, the Curriculum Design and Assessment course (with a grade), the project grade, and the practicum credit will be listed.
-
The total number of hours will be indicated, including independent work (34 hours per credit * 25 credits = 850 hours), as well as actual classroom hours for each course (including the Minor courses).
In what language will the diploma be issued?
- The main text of the diploma will be in Russian, but the qualification title and the course titles will be bilingual (i.e., "Teacher of English as a Second Language/Преподаватель английского языка"). We will also prepare a diploma supplement, where the details of the program you completed (including the Minor) will be given in English. You can use this supplement if an English version of the diploma is required.
How will the practicum be organized?
There will be two options for you to choose from:
1. If you are already teaching somewhere, you can complete the practicum there. HOWEVER, you will still need to attend the "Practicum" lectures, prepare a lesson plan, and participate in some seminars (observing and discussing other students' lessons), as peer observation is an integral part of teacher training.
2. If you are not yet teaching, you will teach "each other" (peer teaching) under the guidance of an experienced tutor and receive detailed feedback from the tutor and your colleagues.
Details about the practicum will be provided in November.
What if I joined the minor after it started and don't have a grade for the "Language, Culture, and Language Teaching" course?
- All students who transferred to the minor did so under individual conditions discussed with the Minor Director. If you have fulfilled all the conditions, an assessment (September-October) for the first minor course will be organized for you (it will be formality, and you won't need to do anything).
!!! Your grade for this course will be your average minor grade (rounded to the nearest whole number). For example, if you received a 5 for the Didactics course, a 4 for the Effective Language Learning course, and a 4 for the Methodology course, your grade for the first minor course (5+4+4)/3=4.33 – after rounding, it will be a 4.
You cannot improve this grade; it will simply reflect your overall work during the Minor, as we cannot properly assess you for the first minor course. Since you cannot receive a teacher diploma without this grade, such a compromise decision has been made.
!!! Important: After this reassessment, you may have an excess of credits in your main Bachelor program, and you will need to choose this course to include in the main part of your diploma (and move one course from your main program to the elective part). Then you won't have to pay for the extra credits. For details, please contact your program manager.
If you have any questions, ask them in the Telegram chat. Let's keep the chat the same: !!best minor ever!!
We will also post updates there regarding the enrollment stages for the program.
