Diploma "Teacher of English as a Second Language"
If you would like to sign up for the Diploma program in 2024, follow this link.
Students who complete all the four minor courses will have the opportunity to take two additional courses, prepare a small project, and receive a state-recognized diploma of professional qualification "Teacher of English as a Second Language." The program runs in September - January of your fourth year at university.
What is required for this?
The entire "Teacher of English as a Second Language" diploma program consists of 6 courses plus a preparation of a small final project:
- Language, Culture, and Intercultural Communication
- Didactics and Language Teaching
- Effective Foreign Language Learning
- Methods and Technologies for Foreign Language Teaching
- Curriculum Design and Language Assessment + project (designing a learning unit)
- Practicum in English Teaching
You will complete the first four courses as part of the minor. In your 4th university year (normally end of September to January), you will have the opportunity to take the last two courses and the project, and those who meet all the requirements will receive a diploma of professional retraining. All courses will be taught online.
Your first 4 minor courses are free (as a part of your Bachelor program), but there is a fee to cover the costs of the two-course extension, which leads to a diploma.
Why do I need a teaching diploma? Isn't the minor enough?
Completing the minor may be enough for some of you. You will already learn a lot about languages, cultures, and teaching in general, and specifically about teaching foreign languages, and apply this knowledge and skills in practice. The two additional courses that lead to the diploma will teach you how to create your own courses, as well as gain some teaching experience through a practicum, when you will be supervised by experienced educators and receive feedback on your teaching from them. Most students find this part particularly useful. The Diploma program provides a more substantial skill set, as well as an official document that formally recognizes your new skills.
Do I need to decide now whether I will pursue the Diploma program?
No, you don’t need to decide now. Enroll in the minor, and once you complete it, you can make your decision.
