The main goal of the Minor is to help students develop their own position on one of the most debated topic nationally and internationally – on State’s obligations to respect and protect Human Rights and the role of different societies in recognizing Human Rights of Others. The Minor is rich with theoretical knowledge about various Human Rights concepts and provide multiple examples illustrating their implementation in different countries and cultures, not escaping existing problems and controversies. On the practical side, the participants will be provided with opportunities of analyzing specific cases, learning practical skills in advocacy, campaigning and promotion of human rights domestically and globally. Students will learn to apply theoretical concepts to practical cases, to be able to explain various causes preventing human rights implementation, to analyze the enforcement mechanisms of the European Court of Human Rights, the UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies and domestic courts of nation states. All courses of this Minor are highly interactive, where students will work in groups, prepare presentations on selected cases, and engage in debates on contemporary Human Rights practices, including recognition of most vulnerable groups, analysis of dominant cultural values of the given society, identifying legal and political regulatory environments. As the result, students will learn to identify key actors, including Human Rights Defenders and their networks, their successful campaigns as well as risks and direct harassment they face, while their activities are reshaping social behaviors, ways of thinking and the patterns of governance on different levels.
