General courses are aimed at broadening students' outlook, mastering instruments and methods of allied sciences, enhancing critical thinking.
"General courses" section contains compulsory courses in safe living bases, physical training as well as other courses offered by the university.
This section includes the following courses:
- Law/Legal literacy
- Communications and Media Competence
General courses in law and economics are compulsory for students of all degree programmes unless similar courses are present in major. In such cases degree programme academic supervisor may introduce other courses (changes will be stated in the curriculum).
Third general course is selected by a student starting from 2022/2023 academic year.
Elective General Courses
Starting from 2022/2023 academic year third general course is selected by students.
Place of elective general courses in the curriculum is determined by porgramme's academic supervisor (may be planned for any semester of any academic year).
Nevertheless, a student may customize their learning process and decide to take elective general course in any study period (earlier or later than stated in the curriculum). Compulsory condition is to take elective general course before finishing all the studies (before Final State Certification).
For example, if a student could not select desired general course due to lack of places, they might try select the course again in the next study year.
Students select elective general courses using SmartWay system in September (fist semester courses) and December (second semester courses). During all the studies a student should select only one course from this section.
Elective general courses are accessible for students from all the campuses. Lectures are in the form of online course, format of seminars is determined by a department providing the course (online or offline in a student's campus, see the schedule).
For English-taught degree programmes elective general courses are available in English. Students of Russian-taught programmes may also select courses in English if places are available.
All elective general courses include an online course (at SmartLMS platform). Students are signed up for the courses automatically.
You can change selected general course or exclude it from your curriculum if no more than 10 (ten) working days have passed after the start of the respective course; or, no more than 20% of contact classes have been held under the course (online or offline).

If you are not satisfied with teaching mode, class format etc. you can transfer to a different seminar group if no more than 10 (ten) working days have passed after the start of the respective course.
You can transfer to a different group outside of the above stated period in case of schedule overlays.
To change a group (if no more than 10 (ten) working days have passed after the start of the respective course) you should contact us at: https://pmo.hse.ru/servicedesk/customer/portal/122, state your selected course, include information on to which group you would like to transfer (group number) and why.

- search by professor's last name in "Lecturer" tab;
- search by group number in "Group" tab (group number looks like М_Ф_Г_340056_1#Г#Философия, where the red digit is an actual group number; if you want to change your group, you may copy the number from your schedule, change the red digit to a group number you are interested in and check this group's schedule).
To change a group (if more than 10 (ten) working days have passed after the start of the respective course) you should contact a professor of a group you want to transfer to, recieve their approval; contact us at: https://pmo.hse.ru/servicedesk/customer/portal/122, state your selected course i, include information on to which group you would like to transfer (group number) and include professor's approval e-mail.
A student must attend classes with the assigned group and according to the assigned shedule.
