About MagoLego

MagoLego are mandatory electives for master's students, which they select and complete during their 1st and 2nd years of study. Students must allocate a certain number of credits to these courses, with the flexibility to select subjects from a range of different fields offered by other educational programs.

MagoLego is a compulsory module within the educational programme, meaning all students must select and complete it.
The number of credits that can be allocated to MagoLego courses varies depending on the specific programme and the student’s educational track.
Students can choose several MagoLego courses within the allowed number of credits, ensuring that all credits are fully utilised.
In the first year, students can select and complete courses from any module.
In the second year, students can only select and complete courses offered in modules 1-3.
MagoLego courses can be chosen either from those offered within the programme or department, or from the broader pool of MagoLego courses provided by other departments at HSE University.

How to find out the number of credits to allocate for MagoLego

To view the curriculum of your degree programme and find out the number of credits that can be spent on MagoLego, visit the programme’s website. From the right-hand menu, click on "Documents", select "Degree Programme Curriculum", and then choose the year of your enrolment to view the curriculum relevant to your entry year.

How and when to register for MagoLego

Students select their MagoLego courses before the start of each semester during the course selection campaign, which takes place in December and June (keep an eye out for selection announcements from your academic office).
The course selection process is conducted via the SmartWay system.
The selected courses must be approved by your academic supervisor/track supervisor— it is recommended to consider all advice provided by them and the study office.
Many MagoLego courses have limited spaces, leading to competition for spots — it is advised to make your selection as early as possible.
If you miss out on a course important to you, monitor similar themed courses in subsequent campaigns.

Pay attention to the campus, the course format, the language of instruction, and any required prerequisites when selecting MagoLego courses.

What to do if the chosen course does not suit you

It depends on the reason.

Course unsuitable due to content: You can remove it from your individual study plan by submitting an application to the study office no later than 10 academic days after the start of the course.
Schedule change leading to overlap:

If another study group is available for the course, you may switch to a group that better fits your schedule without needing to drop the course.
If there is only one group for the course, you can withdraw from the course, even if more than 10 academic days have passed since the start of classes.

Individual Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

ILOs are freely formulated, representing your own personal and professional goals that the content of courses at HSE University can help you achieve.

The HSE University Master's degree standards offer students the opportunity to choose additional courses based on their professional interests to achieve these ILOs, in addition to the mandatory courses aimed at developing core learning outcomes (CLOs) that students are required to meet within their degree programme.

To do this, students must identify their goals early in their studies and select appropriate courses within the MagoLego module. Together with their academic supervisor/track supervisor, students formulate their ILOs, which may align with or extend beyond the core curriculum, allowing students to tailor them to their needs and interests.

A student may set no more than five such outcomes. The courses within the MagoLego module should support the achievement of one or more of these individual learning outcomes.

Examples of ILO statements include:

Create a new algorithm for data encryption that improves upon existing security measures.
Analyse the effectiveness of online learning platforms in higher education settings.
Apply advanced econometric techniques to analyse the impact of monetary policy changes on emerging markets.
Design and conduct an experimental study to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy in reducing anxiety levels among university students during exam periods.
